The National Institute of Health (NIH), one of the world's largest and largest health care bodies, has approved the first drug approved for use in Mexico by the Mexican government.
The drug, called Clomid (clomiphene citrate), is a type of drug known as a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). The drug works by stimulating the release of hormones that can stimulate the growth of breast tissue in women who are at risk of osteoporosis.
“In the last decade, we’ve been hearing about the risks of estrogenic side effects, such as osteoporosis and fractures, which are common in women who are at risk of osteoporosis,” said Dr. Maria Martino, a principal in the UCL and a research assistant professor in the UCL Institute of Clinical Research at the University of California, Los Angeles.
A study of women who were at risk of osteoporosis in Mexico in 2015 showed that the use of the drug is linked to a 10-fold increased risk of fractures, compared to the use of no drug.
“This risk was also higher in women with a family history of fractures,” Martino said. “In fact, this increased risk is thought to be related to a greater incidence of osteoporosis in those with a family history of fractures.”
Dr. Martino added that the findings “have important implications for public health, as well as for patients and clinicians.”
In a recent article published in the journalon estrogenic side effects, Martino wrote that “there are no studies to support the association between the use of Clomid and a higher risk of osteoporosis in women with a family history of fractures.”
The study is an observational study that compared the risk of fractures among women who had a history of fractures during the period from 1991 to 2015.
Martino said that the results “are consistent with published research on the association between clomiphene citrate and increased fracture risk in women taking the drug.”
The results of the study “have important implications for public health as well as for patients and clinicians,” she added.
“This study shows that it is important to monitor women for the presence of fractures, and to consider whether the risk of bone fractures has increased,” Martino said.
The researchers also compared the risk of osteoporosis in the group of women taking clomiphene citrate with the group of women who had no drug.
“The risk of fractures was higher for the women who took clomiphene citrate for at least six months and for those who had no history of fractures,” Martino said. “These results provide evidence that clomiphene citrate may have a protective effect against osteoporosis,” she added.
The findings are published inThe Journal of the American Medical Association, and the article is available on the journal's website.

It is a popular drug for treating ovulatory dysfunction (worsening or discontinuing menstrual cycles). However, there are some studies that show that Clomid® (clomiphene citrate) is superior to the estrogen therapy (estrogen alone) in treating ovulatory dysfunction. Clomid® is often prescribed for women who have not ovulated. It is also sometimes prescribed for women who do not ovulate, and it has been shown to be as effective as an estrogen-only treatment. The drug is also sometimes used off-label for inducing ovulation in women with irregular cycles that do not respond to estrogen.
